Paintings and busy weekend
Dec. 13th, 2008 09:24 amIn a few hours I'm leaving for a friend's birthday and immediately after that I'll go to my parent's because tomorrow my mother is having her birthday! It should all be good fun. We'll making honey-cake houses tomorrow... No we never grow up. ;)
Anyway, my mother asked me to do some small drawings/paintings for her birthday and I was happy to comply. And they turned out rather well, so I though I would share:

They are small: 10x15 cm, and done with sepia ink and watercolours. They were good fun to do once I finally figured out what I wanted to paint. Plus they were an excuse to go out and buy more paint... *headdesk*
And I have one final piece to show you. This was a birthday gift to my good friend
bratanimus, who had her birthday last month. I couldn't show it here because the original was on its way to her, and I didn't want to spoil the surprise. ;) But now that I know it has safely arrived I would like to share it with you all. This is Morpheus, Daniel and Matthew from Neil Gaiman's Sandman series:

This is done in ink (lots and lots of ink!), pencil and watercolour. It is A3 size (30x40 cm) in RL.
Thanks for looking, I hope you all have a nice weekend!

Wow, so much lovely art. The Sandman piece is striking, especially with those accents of red. And the watercolors are just beautiful. You really do convey so much through posture, even without showing faces.

Date: 2008-12-13 08:30 pm (UTC)Honey-cake houses are only for christmas. I plan to make a horrible pink honey-cake heart for the boyfriend, which he will hate! LOL I can't wait to see his face.
And thank you! I knew I would only use black white and red on the Sandman piece (except for a tiny bit of green which isn't showing on this scan), because those colours are so striking together. And I'm so happy that the postures are giving of emotions - it's nice to know when something works! :D Thanks again!

Date: 2008-12-16 08:30 pm (UTC)Well, they're exquisite. They are all my favorites, but my favorite is the painting of the seated couple wrapped languorously together, likely rambling to each other, making observations. It's strange I see faces when you've not painted any.
I love that there is a sense of being unrushed, both in content and in execution, throughout the entire series. Timeless serenity is decidedly what I've taken away. And the intimacy is obvious without being explicit. You've painted them touching in every scene. As a whole, the four are like a visual expression for love. Watercolours always make me thing of whispering and your colour palette assists with the comforting feeling present.
Your style with watercolours is so unique because it's intricate and precise such that I can see the edges of hair and pointed toes, yet you retain that vastness and vagueness inherent in the medium.
I love your work, always, but knowing we have a collaboration coming down the pipeline and seeing these as its predecessor makes me a shade of red with excitement.

And it makes me so happy that you are filling in the silhouettes with faces and expressions. It was a very conscient decision to have them touch in all the paintings, as a symbol of connection and love between people.
Watercolours for me are something delicate, but mixed with the ink-lines it becomes something strong as well.. The colours here are supposed to be soothing in their uniformity of yellow and brown, but also slightly offset by the light blue in the background. I'm still learning when it comes to colours..
I'm so excited by our collaboration as well!!! *will go draw immediately*
