Drawble meme #1 of 7: Beleg for Binka
Jan. 12th, 2009 10:35 pmIn the drawble meme,
binkaslibrary asked for Beleg and left me free to choose the setting.
Title: Beleg and the bear
Media: Mechanical pencil
Warning: Nudity (nothing frontal), and hunting. (who is hunted and who is hunter is, perhaps, questionable in this very moment)
Artist's notes: We all agree that the elves who woke at Cuivienen didn't wear clothes right? Right? ;) Anyway. Legend has it that Beleg's legendary bow was strung with bear sinew. Here is the scene that went before.
Drawing time: 2 hours

Date: 2009-01-12 09:55 pm (UTC)I'm particularly pleased with the movement in this - I have a new book on drawing dynamic lines, and it seems to work. Now if only the author wasn't an annoying preacher to read...
You are so very welcome!! Thank YOU! :D

Date: 2009-01-12 10:42 pm (UTC)You've got the movement captured so well and the aggressive stance of the bear.
I have a new book on drawing dynamic lines
What's the name of it?

Date: 2009-01-12 10:54 pm (UTC)The book is called "Force: Dynamic Life Drawing for Animators" by Mike Mattesi. Be warned though that the writing is atrocious, like a bad preacher. Let me quote you some: "I am going to lead you on a force full journey that will change the way you perceive the world you live in. This new perception will clear your mind of the fog of assumption. You will live in a new thruth. This is in turn will make you appreciate life to a new degree". Argh! But his drawing advice is useful and interesting. LOL

Date: 2009-01-13 06:01 am (UTC)Yes, I thought I would try to record the drawing time for these just to see. It might not be possible for all of them because I usually go to and from all the time. ;) Thanks for looking!

Date: 2009-01-13 06:29 pm (UTC)Oh, definitely. :D
Lovely muscles (and buttocks >_>) Beleg got! And I really like the ambiguity of the scene. Beleg looks rather surprised, even a little overwhelmed! Poor bear to have underestimated his prey... :D

Date: 2009-01-15 06:11 am (UTC)Thank you. Yes, perhaps the bear sneaked up on him while he was having a relaxing moment. But he'll get over his surprise in no time. Unfortunately for the bear..

Date: 2009-01-14 09:01 pm (UTC)All right, well, you know that I gush constantly over your stuff so I'll leave my standard remarks out of this and be specific. What's really working for me in this is perspective. Now that that element has featured so prominently in two of your more recent offerings, it's clear your are turning a corner. Not that it wasn't there before but you are giving a greater sense of space by adding background.
I think Beleg's ass is well done. I know that sounds shallow but it's how I'd expect it to look (just like a photograph ;P). Also, his left leg is articulated to give a good squat impression. And you've completed the pose with the arched foot and splayed fingers, showing he's trying to keep his footing.
Can I point out an oddity? (and you know me well enough that I'm not trying to ruin this lovely finished product but I do know it would seem like I haven't commented in a while then come in with the concrit. Let me know, it's minor.)

Date: 2009-01-15 06:18 am (UTC)Thank you for pointing out what works for you in this picture. Both the perspective and the foreshortening were interesting challenges. And you know I have been forcing myself to do backgrounds more, so it's great to hear that it is working.
Also, thank you for the photograph comment! You of all people know how I have longed for that particular compliment. ;) LOL! Beleg's ass was also one of the more pleasant aspects of this drawing to get right.
Please point out the oddity! :D I will always want to hear stuff like that. Maybe it can be changed in this picture, but certainly it would be of help in the future.

lol - yes, I remember our chat about this. His nudity makes him appear so vulnerale, but of course it doesn't make much of a difference in his ability to wield a spear.
The bear's spirit would probably agree that appearances can be deceptive!

Date: 2009-01-17 08:21 pm (UTC)I'm glad that you can see that Beleg is startled and that the bear appears menacing. Thank you so much for leaving a comment. :)
