hrymfaxe: (But then I got high)

I have tired of only doing quick sketches, so I decided to do fewer and spend longer on them. I hope it shows, lol! There is a warning for see-through clothes and a heretic representation of a Maia for prompt 17. ;)

Prompt 15: Dare I disturb the universe. Mablung and Beleg on their way to Nirnaeth Arnoediad. Then Thingol fortified the marches of his realm, and went not to war, nor any out of Doriath save Mablung and Beleg, who were unwilling to have no part in these great deeds. Would they wonder if they did the right thing, and if their presence or absence would disturb the universe?

Prompt 17: Break a stereotype. The meeting of Melian and Thingol. It's all very romantically described in the Silmarillion, where they meet and an enchantment fall on them so they stand in a forest holding hands while years go by... But we are also told the elves were fair beyond compare, so what did Melian have to so capture Thingol's attention? Well, she was akin to Yavannah, Queen of the Earth and growing things, so I thought she might have chosen a more "earthy" form, one suited for procreation and love? ;) And I don't believe those two were just standing around, when there are so much better ways to celebrate being in love.

Love these! Especially saucy Melian-- A man doesn't just wander off into the woods, forsaking his kin and ignoring a summons from the Valar, just to stare appreciatively into a woman's eyes... there was definitely a little more of the "celebrating the fecundity of the earth on the moist and fertile soil beneath the tall, hard trees" going on than Tolkien would like to admit!

Thank you! I'm glad you agree on this very different image of Melian, and this: "celebrating the fecundity of the earth on the moist and fertile soil beneath the tall, hard trees" was exactly what I was thinking! :D Tolkien must have been in denial about many of the relationships in his works...

I love these! A rather raunchy Melian... *Chortles*

I really like the shading and shapes in the first one - beautiful! Yes, they must wonder if they are doing the right thing...

Thank you! :D Yes - Melian really wanted to try something different. ;)

I'm really happy to hear you like the shading in the first one - I had done the line work and then (daringly) went at it with the shadows, all the while hoping I wouldn't ruin it. They are indeed going into a full-blown war against the wishes of their king, and should they rather have stayed home to help weather the consequences?

You draw horses so well :) I love that one for the wonderfully detail, the way the horses trot towards the battlefield, all trusting and willing to listen. The guys look pretty confident as well.

Melian and Thingol, oh my he's tall!!!! I can just see Melian popping up as a lil and enchanting woodsprite, the way he holds her hand as she strips off his belt... It reminds me of Irish folklore where one has to be aware of those dangerous elves... ^-^

Wonderful drawings!

Ah my, horses! I love them! :D And I spent far too much time deciding just what sort of horses they would be riding to the battlefield. >.< I'm glad you like that one - the guys are confident in their skills, but are they going to the right battleground, or should they rather have stayed home?

And I had so much fun exagerating the height difference between Thingol and Melian (so I may have broken the stereotype with her, but probably not with him.. ;)) And I like your way of thinking with the woodsprite and elf-lore! LOL! As an elf, he thought he was safe, but of course he can be lured in as well.

Thank you so much! :D

Well strong steeds like that, fast too. I always thought that Mablung and Beleg's feeling of responsibility reached further than Doriath, I think thats one of their arguments :)

As for Thingol, he looks a bit eum easy to impress hehe, not the wise and stouthearted leader as many think he is. :D

Thank you, thank you, thank you! What a wonderful comment to wake up to. :D

There are many sketches to go through, so take your time. And the tagging is all for you! I'm slowly going through all my entries, and deploring how many I have felt the need to write! LOL!

ETA: I just saw that you have sent in the icon of Sirius on his bike for [livejournal.com profile] bigbangblackout! :D It makes me happy!

These are wonderful! I love the horses in the first drawing. The guys look awesome as well. There's a lot of confidence in the movements of the horses here, and I bet the elves were pretty sure they were doing the right thing by going to the Nirnaeth.

As for the "heretic" look at the Maia, well, I don't really think I'd call that heretic. ;) I don't think they just stood there and gaped at one another -- well, maybe for the first few moments. I love the discarded sword, and Melian's reaching up to Thingol's face. She is natural and eager, like a goddess of nature :)

Very well done!

Thank you so much! I loved drawing those two on horseback! There just is something about a man astride a horse... And of course these horses trust their riders, and are confidently striding towards the battle. I think they hoped they were doing the right thing, and contributing to a battle where the enemy was finally overthrown, but they can't have been sure..

Goddess of nature, exactly! Thingol will not know what hit him, but he may thank Eru all the same. ;)

Great details on the horses in the first drawing--it's so very action-oriented. The extra time you spent on these two clearly shows.

Thank you! I had fun with the horses and their riders going of to war. I'm glad you read action and motion into this one. And also glad that there is a noticeable difference between a quick sketch and something a bit more worked through! :D

*squee!*

I love the top picture. (Well, I like the second one too - you can't go wrong with a tall man in boots for me ;)- but obviously the horses take priority, lol.) You've really captured the size and power of Friesians, but also the grace and beauty with which they move. I love the characteristically rippling manes and tails, and the shading down the rider on the right. Then there's the 'at home' attitude of them in the saddle, but the less confident suggestion that one is asking the other Are we doing the right thing here?

It's wonderful. ♥

Edited because I'm so excited I typed 'also' three times in three sentences. Which is also too many!

*squeeees back* Yay horses! I'm so happy that you can feel the power and weight of the horses. They are quite massive animals, but so graceful all the same. They are so beautiful and it's a pleasure to trawl for images of them (though there is a dearth of images of them from behind..). Also thank you for liking the shading, and for reading a note of doubt in the riders regarding their mission.

(I'm glad the tall man in boots didn't completely slip by you ;))

Thank you for being excited enough to write also a lot of times! ♥

Woooow! *o* These are lovely! Melian's dress is so floaty and yet filmy, fits the scene perfectly~ And I love how you draw horses, they're just gorgeous! And so are the two on top of them ahem ;D That quote, I do love that quote. It's just so wonderfully characteristic of Mablung and Beleg, I remember reading the Sil the first time, and thinking just before this part, "Thingol might not send anyone out but these two! They won't sit back, will they?" And they didn't! ^^

Yay! Thank you so much! I had fun trying to draw Melian's dress with ink, but I'm quite pleased with how it worked out. :D And you know I love drawing horses too, so I'm glad you appreciate them and their riders. ;) I love that quote as well - they had hope that this was the battle to end them all, and naturally they could not but lend their aid. Still, leaving their home in such times cannot have been a light decision...

Happy birthday btw!!!! :D *confetti*
