This weekend is full of visits to the family, and tonight is no exception. I'm off to my parents' in a little while to enjoy what looks like one of the last really nice days of summer for a while... Please cross your fingers that the rain will stay away tomorrow, or that will be the fourth (out of five) motorcycle lessons to be completed while rained upon. That should tell you something about the summer we have had so far. *glares*

Anyway, I just thought I'd share a drawing I did a while ago for the Queen's Thief Series by Megan Whalen Turner. It's spoilerish if you want to read the series, so I'm putting it below a cut, in case you want to avoid it. ;)

Title: Regaining balance
Characters: Eugenides
Rating: PG
Warnings: Some nudity (torso), and spoilers for Queen of Attolia.
Summary: After certain events, Gen needs to relearn some skills.
Artist's Notes: Made with ink and watercolours. Feedback is greatly appreciated.

I haven't read the books you're referring but I don't need to know anything to know that this is a really lovely piece...despite the fact that he's missing his hand! I particularly like the hilites & shadows in his pants. Very dramatic.

Hope the rain stays away for you!

I think you'd enjoy the books (and then you can read [livejournal.com profile] shimotsuki's fic for them, as well as know the full meaning of [livejournal.com profile] hrymfaxe's art!). I love these as much as Chalion and I don't say that very often. There's a spoiler free review of them here. One caveat: the first book is good but aimed at a young audience; it's the next two where I got hooked/obsessed/started raving about them to passing people on LJ. ;)

Oh I agree that the books really pick up pace and depth from the second book, but the first one is so great for showing the readers how they have no clue what is going on. ;)

Please rave about books to me even more often!

I might have another one for you some time (so we can fill in the ttime till CoK;)), but it's early days/chapters and I haven't fallen for the hero or any of the characters yet. So far so good, though... (Mind you, I will be putting it down very firmly tomorrow, so that I write rather than read other people's!)

Hope you had our lovely, sunny (and rare) day. :)

Oh that sounds intriguing! I look forward to hearing the final verdict, whether you recommend it or not.. And I hope you are currently typing happily away at o-fic and not sneaking to read the book under the table. ;)

It looks overcast right now and it rained this morning.. There are 5 hours for it to clear up! *glares at the clouds*

I had an Amazon Gift certificate so I ordered the first two, and the next Star Wars novel. So far your recs have been very good so I feel confident that I'll enjoy them. Don't know about the SW book but as long as Han and Leia have something to do, it won't be a total loss.

Aren't they just the best gifts? (Well, next to Remus popping round for afternoon tea.) I shall be a bit anxious about this, lol, especially as I enjoyed the first one but it's a quick read, and certainly not earth-shattering. Except you need to read it to start to 'get' the main character, and the world he lives in, and realise that there are so many twists in the books ahead...

I will use my Han icon in honour and respect for one of my favourite ever pairings.

I second [livejournal.com profile] gilpin25's recommendation of the books. :D And thank you for taking a look all the same, and for saying such nice things about it. I certainly had fun drawing such a different pose, and you telling me the lighting works makes me very very happy.

Hope the rain stays away for you!

Oh I hope so too, thanks! It's no fun to drive a bike in the rain..

I just ordered the first two books from Amazon and am looking forward to reading something new. [livejournal.com profile] gilpin25's recs are usually spot on so I'm sure I'll enjoy them.

Oh, I love this acrobatic man. He has wonderfully curled toes! I wonder if they help him balance? I agree with [personal profile] drumher that the highlights on the trousers are particularly great. The splash of red adds something nice, too. Your figures just amaze me! (And thank you for the nude torso warning...I felt very prepared.)

You have been busy this weekend; hopefully next week things will slow down (another lesson tomorrow?!?). But for the evening, may storms stay away from your noble and proud country.

Say hi to Mom and Dad!

It's so great how you notice these little things on my drawings! I really like his curled toes too, and they (like when I stick my tongue out to concentrate) are certainly essential to his keeping his balance. ;) Yes, nude torsos. I know how delicate my flist is about these things, so I only thought it proper to warn you! lol! Thanks for liking the red splash - I do too.

Yes very busy weekend. I look forward to being unemployed tomorrow. ;)

I haven't read the books, but great picture. <3

So you're having rain issues over there, too? I swear, it's not global warming, it's global rainforest.

Thank you so much!

And what is up with this rain? Honestly! And I'm noticing a curious pattern that it mostly rains on Mondays... The climate is up to something.

Still love this! :)

Hope you're having some nice times with your family, and that the weather is cooperating.

It's sunny here, but the forecast is for about 38 C, so I am hunkering down indoors with some air conditioning. :(

One more bike lesson! Does that mean you will be licensed, or will you have to take an exam?

Thank you for still loving this. I thought it would be nice to have it stored here on my own lj as well.

The visit with the parents was very nice and relaxing, thank you, and so far the weather is behaving just fine. But I'm keeping an eye out for those clouds... (though I would certainly rather have our weather than 38C!!! O.o!)

One more bike lesson!
Ah, no, I didn't explain very well.. It was that out of the four lessons so far, three have been in the rain. I still have four more practical lessons to go, a theoretical exam and a practical exam (with the police!!!!) before I have my license. So at least another month yet to drool over what bike to get when I'm done. ;)

Woooow! This is so cool, I adore how you did the anatomy here! :D And oh God, your watercolour skills never cease to amaze. I love his pants. :3 And his feet, so beautifully done, the arches especially! I still haven't gotten my paws on those series...

Thank you so much for leaving such a nice comment! :D I'm so glad you like the anatomy (and especially the feet, which are so darned hard to do!) And you know I love those watercolours.

Get your paws on them!! Now! ;)

Wow! This is really good, hrymfaxe. XD

Did you manage the motorbike lesson without getting wet? It's been mostly dry over here so I hope it's the same at your place.

Thank you! :D Making him look like he could actually stand on one hand was the true challenge of this piece. I also enjoyed tyring to imagine how the rib-cage would look in such a pose.

How did you like the books?

I liked them quite a bit. The first one took a little while to prove itself, but in the end was one of my two favorites. I loved the Queen of Attolia, especially the siege and sailing bit (I guess I'm a sucker for adventure, especially when coupled with romance). I liked the third, but I felt like the early abundance of minor characters stole a little of my patience at times. I've been meaning to go back and reread it.

:D Yes, the first one felt very much like a YA book, but the end more than made up for that in my opinion. ;) Oh the sailing bit in QoA is awesome! And it had a lot more layers than The Thief (politics especially) which was very interesting.

And I agree about the third one - who was this Costis person?! And why was he narrating? But it's good on the reread, because by then you know them. ;)
