Spn art - three studies
Feb. 21st, 2010 10:11 pmI'm part of the Pulpympics event over at
pulped_fictions, and one of the challenges was to set ourselves a goal for this month. I chose to do studies of lighting on bodies/faces, and since SPN has taken over my brain at the moment, it was only natural to involve that as well. Below the cut is one portrait and two nude male torsos. Just so you know. In case that would scare you away, though I think I would not know you very well if that happened. ;)

I have stayed pretty close to my references for all three of these, because that was the whole point. I don't usually, so it was an interesting exercise in observation. If you are interested in the reference photos I will happily provide them. Thank you for looking!

Date: 2010-02-21 10:08 pm (UTC)Srsly, these are fantastic. I'm guessing you chose to do the shading in pen and ink rather than watercolor so you could really focus on it and make it precise? I like the effect, whatever the reason.
I'm also curious to know whether the references already had a strong light source, or whether you had to imagine adding one and imagine what it would do to the figures?
And congratulations for progress on your goal! (Even if you are on the wrong team...)

Date: 2010-02-21 10:21 pm (UTC)Thank you so much. Yes, I saw a similar technique and thought it would be useful for these studies - it does make it less spontaneous, but that worked well for these. I like the effect too!
And I chose the references specifically because they had strong light sources, so I didn't have to make things up (well, I did end up making some things up, because I wanted a pose I could only find in part. ;))
Yes, this brings me close to the finish line on the goal! Just one more to go actually. And the Figure Skating... 7 days should be more than enough, right?

Date: 2010-02-22 12:50 pm (UTC)I also like the eyes and hair and shading on the facial portrait: the eye colour seems to change between grey and blue the longer I look. There's a lot of strength and depth in that face.
What an excellent goal to have for the excellent Red Team!

Date: 2010-02-22 01:13 pm (UTC)I'm so glad there is 3-dimensionality in the face - it is always a particular challenge, but perhaps even more so this time, when I was trying out new things.
Thank you!!! GO RED TEAM!

Date: 2010-02-26 06:00 pm (UTC)I'm sorry I missed them before...
I love your style---seemingly abstract lines and color masses come together to form quite realistic images. It makes for a powerful visual.
In the first pic the eyes are the perfect focus point! The next two have such a feeling of strength and power---perfectly accentuated by your choice of color in the background.
Awesome all-around!

Date: 2010-02-26 06:16 pm (UTC)The ink part of these was very controlled, but the colour was dabbled on much more loosely - especially in the background. I'm so happy that they accentuate what is going on in the foreground. You know what trouble I have just letting go. ;)

Just wandering about in awe. I've decided to re-stalk your journal a bit this morning, but this time leave you cheerleadery message, just in case your awesomeness hasn't been affirmed enough.
